What to expect when you’re expecting a Maine Coon Kitten :-)

Well now! First off, let me start with Congratulations on reserving your new baby! What an exciting time!

Now is the perfect time to begin preparing for his/her arrival! If you haven’t done so already, you’ll want to grab a Cat Tree (for Giant or Large Cat breeds), some scratching posts, a food and water bowl, a bag of Solid Gold kitten food (you’ll need this to either maintain your baby’s current diet, or to transition him/her to their new food you’ve selected.), some toys, treats, a litter box, and I’d highly recommend Dr. Elsey’s Cat Litter šŸ™‚ We’ve used it for years, and it is incredible as far as odor preventative and absorption.

When you Receive your kitten-

Depending upon your kitten’s growth rate, you can expect to receive him/her between 10-12 weeks of age. When you first lay eyes upon your new furever friend, you can expect them to be anywhere from 1.5-3 lbs! They’re teeny tiny bundles of fur upon arrival, and not much larger than an average kitten that’s 16-20 weeks old. Their features however, will be distinct, and what will set them apart from other felines will be their strong lynx tips, thick tufts, angular jaws and full bodies, with a hint of a growing mane.

Over the next several months, you’ll want to take your kitten in for another examination and the two additional rounds of booster shots, along with a rabies vaccination at 6 months of age. After this time, your kitty will need only annual checkups from your veterinarian.

By 6 months of age, your kitten will be from 9-13 pounds and a lean, lanky teenager. They’ll go from being rambunctiously playful explorers, to becoming more laid back, calm, and relaxed.

By one year of age, your kitten won’t look so much like a kitten any longer.. Their mane will have thickened considerably, along with a growth spurt in development of their tufts, and lengthening of their lynx tips. You’ll be astonished that not long ago, your baby came home a little wee lad, and became an animal seemingly overnight with such distinctive features, stature and poise, and a commanding presence that you wouldn’t believe this was once the kitten you’d first embraced. While their looks are ever changing and weight as well as Build is ever increasing until 5 years of age, their temperament remains steadfast, friendly, and affectionate. They’re truly gentle giants. šŸ™‚

And their arrival will come quicker than you think! So make sure you’re prepared šŸ™‚
